Building on its report covering 2025, Winterflood has published the second edition of its data-driven insight into the trading activity of UK investors. The latest Winterflood UK Retail Investor Report, based on proprietary data from the first quarter of 2026, is now available. The analysis draws on data from Winterflood Retail Intelligence (“WRI”), developed by an in-house team of data scientists and strategists, which aggregates information from over 150 retail-facing counterparties and provides detailed analytics on more than 97% of UK retail trade flow in equities and ETFs.

“The outcomes of this report again offer a window into UK retail’s impressive ability to react to rapidly changing political and market dynamics. UK retail investors have demonstrated confidence and intelligence in actively managing their portfolios during a period of upheaval to global energy markets and politics this quarter.”

Highlights of the report include:

  • Retail investors were highly attuned to Donald Trump’s fast-changing rhetoric, adeptly navigating geopolitical developments on Venezuela, Greenland and Iran
  • Outflows around the November 2025 UK Budget were higher than in Q1 2026, suggesting domestic policy was more influential for retail investors than geopolitical instability
  • Financials, technology and consumer sectors were most popular in Q1, as capital flowed out of energy stocks
  • BP case study demonstrates skill of retail investors to differentiate the corporate story from wider sector trends
